The Mystery Behind the Algorithm
--
To understand the Instagram algorithm, you need to know what it is and how it works.
What is an Instagram algorithm?
The Instagram algorithm is a way to determine whether a photo or video has been liked by other users. It’s like a computer program that uses algorithms to figure out which photos and videos get shared most often.
The algorithm looks at several factors:
How many people are following the person posting the image or video How long ago they posted the picture or video What type of content they post Most importantly, how much time people spend on their accounts How many times they post each day
In order for this algorithm to work, there needs to be a lot of data about your followers. The more people who follow you, the better the chance that someone will like your post — if they return the follow back.
So how do you find out if you’re getting enough likes on your posts?
You can use one of two methods:
1) You can look at the number of likes on your instagram profile. If you see a spike in likes after a certain date, then you have more followers than you thought. Generally 1/16 of your followers liking a particular posts is safe as you start out!
2) On the flip side, if you are not getting any likes, or very few in relation to your follower count, you are doing something wrong in your process. Maybe its your approach — you are selling far more than your adding content or value. Or it could be the quality of your posts- either the visual quality or something in the message beneath.
If you want to learn more about these two methods, check out our guide to finding out how many likes your friends have on Instagram.
Why does my profile get so few likes?
This is because Instagram doesn’t give any weight to people who don’t follow you back. This means that if you haven’t followed them back for months or years, chances are good that you won’t make it onto the list of most popular people on Instagram.
But what happens when I try to upload a new photo or video?
When you upload a new photo or video, Instagram takes away all of the Likes you’ve accumulated over the last 30 days. So if you uploaded a photo with a lot of Likes in January, but only got 5 likes today, you’ll probably not make the cut.
However, if you keep uploading pictures and videos, you should eventually get into the top 50 most popular people on Instagram.
That’s pretty cool! But why is my photo getting less likes?
Instagram doesn’t care about the likes you’ve had in the past. Instead, it cares about the likes you have now. That means that if you’re currently liking photos and videos that were taken a while ago (or even if you just recently started liking), your photo will start getting fewer likes as soon as you stop liking them.
It also means that the longer you stay on Instagram, the less likely you are to get into the top 50 most popular people.
Is there anything else I can do to increase my Instagram popularity?
There are plenty of ways you can boost your Instagram popularity. Here are some of the best ways:
Make sure you update your profile picture regularly. People tend to like photos and videos that they think are important to share with their friends. Make sure you always include a picture of yourself in your profile picture whenever possible.

Use hashtags to help your posts stand out. Hashtags are a great way to add value to your posts. They’re quick and easy to remember and they let people know exactly where you came from.
